Why SMS beats apps for family coordination

There are dozens of family chore apps. Most families try one for two weeks, then drift back to a whiteboard or a group chat or nothing at all. The app sits on the phone, uninstalled or forgotten, while the same arguments happen at Sunday dinner.

The problem isn't that the apps are bad. It's that they require a behavior change no one asked for. Every family member has to download something, make an account, remember to open it, and actually use it — all before any coordination can happen. That's four failure points before you get to the chore itself.

SMS has none of those problems. Everyone already has it. There's nothing to install, no login to forget, no push notification that gets buried. A text arrives, you reply. Done.

For families especially, the lowest-friction tool wins. Parents don't want to police another app. Kids don't want to learn another interface. SMS is the lowest common denominator in the best possible sense: it already works for everyone in the household.

Chored handles household coordination over SMS — no app required.
